Father’s Day Crab Carbonara and 2011 Muscat

Father’s Day is coming this week and my dad loves crab cakes. I made that back in November for his birthday. So, instead of the same dish, I thought why not pasta with crab! I am making a crab carbonara pasta. The traditional way is with guanciale or pancetta. I am substituting it with crab.

This Sunday its going to be hot! Having a pasta dish with a cold glass of white wine sounds fabulous! I am going to pair this with 2011 Reyes Muscat. There are just a few cases left. I have had a lot of fun pairing…

Stuffed Peppers and 2016 Renaissance by Reyes Rosé

Stuffed Peppers and 2016 Renaissance by Reyes Rosé

SatuStuffed Peppersrday would have been my mom’s birthday. Its been three years yet it feels like yesterday she was here. I was thinking, what I should make for dinner that I know she would have loved. In the meantime, while I was thinking about different things she liked, I noticed this pan she had in the kitchen that she used for a few things like Stuffed Bell Peppers, Thanksgiving stuffing balls, and a few other dishes. It held 6 peppers perfectly. It…

2018 Rosa’s Choice Rosé and Strawberry Cake

Yesterday, for the first time I made pretzels and pretzel buns. They came out perfect and they were so delicious. We had hamburgers with the buns. But I was trying to figure out what I should do with the fresh strawberries I bought at the farm on Monday. I was running out of eggs and I wanted to use one for the hamburgers, so I kept thinking what to do. Then it hit me as I starred into the fridge, Strawberry lemon cake! I took a fresh lemon from our tree…

Is Moscato the same as Muscat?

Is Moscato the same as Muscat?

By Beth Heiserman

Every weekend, guests come to our tasting room and request Moscato instead of Muscat. Is there a difference, Yes! First, the name Muscato is Italian for Muscat. Muscat grapes are grown all around the world. Every country refers to the grape differently. In Italy it is Muscato D’Asti, Germany has Muskateller; while France, Australia and America have Muscat. France generally only uses the Muscat grape in fortified wines but can be found in sparkling and a still dry white wine depending upon the region. Germany grows predominately two…

What is the difference between cooking wine and wine you drink?

What is the difference between cooking wine and wine you drink?

By Beth P. Heiserman

This week, I had a customer ask is there a difference between a cooking a wine and wine that is called for in a recipe. The answer is yes and no. It depends upon the wine that is part of the recipe. But for the most part, the main difference is the quality of wine. Drinking wine is a much better quality. Cooking with a drinking wine will give you a better dish because…

2011 Reyes Muscat Chicken Sausage Hash Brown Casserole

By Beth P. Heiserman

My mother and grandmother always made casserole when I was growing up. Brunch at grandma’s was always fun. I always looked forwarded to spending time with my grandparents. This is one of my favorites that I love to share when I cater the monthly hike and brunch at Reyes Winery. Sometimes I add hatch chiles when they are in season or even sometimes red pepper pesto which I did for this past hike. Many people adored…

What is Port Wine?

What is Port Wine?

by Beth P Heiserman

Port is a Portuguese fortified wine which must be made in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. It is generally consumed as a dessert wine, since it can be very sweet and decadent. There are several types of Port; red, white, rosé and an aged style called Tawny Port. Plus there are dry and semi-dry varieties. Fortified wines may be produced anywhere in the world, but only can be labeled “Port” from Portugal.

Ruby port is the inexpensive and most widely produced type of port. After…

Table Grapes vs Wine Grapes

Table Grapes vs Wine Grapes

Is there a difference?

By Beth Heiserman

Many people have asked me in the tasting room or during a tour the difference between wine grapes and table grapes…Is there a difference? I have even heard is there a chemical reaction that converts grapes into a varietal of wine. At first I didn’t understand the question. I actually had that question twice in one day. I asked them to elaborate; they thought all grapes were the same and that we add some chemicals to crate the varietal of wine. No, we don’t….

Is Your Beverage Vegan?

Is Your Beverage Vegan?

With more emphasis on organic and vegan options winemakers are changing the way they make wine.

by Beth P. Heiserman

What do you know about your wine? Is it vegan? How can you find out?

Winemakers, brew masters and distillers may include animal by-products directly in their products, or use them during processing and filtration.
In the course of processing the product sometimes dairy, honey and other items are added.
During filtration, which happens just prior to bottling, products like isinglass (from fish bladder,) gelatin, egg whites and other materials are used.Read More
